Shopify in Bahrain: Benefit Payments, BHD Pricing and Setup

Yes, Shopify works in Bahrain, but Shopify Payments doesn't. You connect a gateway linked to BENEFIT, such as Tap, to take Benefit debit, BenefitPay, cards and Apple Pay, add Tamara for instalments, and price in BHD with three decimals and 10% VAT included.

Key takeaways
  • Shopify works in Bahrain, and about 829 live stores already run there. Shopify Payments isn't available, so every store uses an outside gateway.
  • Pick a gateway linked to BENEFIT, such as Tap, so shoppers can pay with Benefit debit and BenefitPay as well as cards and Apple Pay.
  • Shopify adds 2% (Basic) down to 0.2% (Plus) on gateway and Tamara orders. Grow pays for itself once monthly online payments pass 100 times the price gap between the two plans.
  • Tamara has a free Shopify app that covers Bahrain. Tabby doesn't operate there.
  • Set the store currency to BHD, show three decimals, include 10% VAT, and keep cross-border parcels under BHD 100 or charge duty at checkout.

Yes, Shopify works in Bahrain. About 829 live stores already run there, from Manama perfume houses to fashion labels selling across the Gulf.

There's one thing to know up front. Shopify Payments isn't available in Bahrain, so you connect an outside payment gateway.

Pick the right one and your checkout takes Benefit debit and BenefitPay, the two ways most Bahrainis pay.

Here's what it costs, how to get paid, how to price in dinars and how to ship.

Does Shopify work in Bahrain?

Yes. You choose Bahrain as your store address, set the currency to BHD and sell to shoppers across the island.

Here's what's different from a UAE store:

  • No Shopify Payments. It covers the UAE only in the Gulf, so Bahraini stores use a third-party gateway.
  • Local cards need BENEFIT. Benefit debit and BenefitPay only work through a gateway connected to the national switch.
  • Three-decimal currency. BHD prices read BD 9.900, not BD 9.90.

How much does Shopify cost in Bahrain?

Shopify bills in US dollars and prices its plans by the country you register in. Basic runs $19–29 a month on annual billing, so plan with the price shown at sign-up.

The bigger cost is Shopify's transaction fee. Without Shopify Payments, Shopify adds it to every order paid through a gateway or Tamara:

PlanShopify fee on gateway and Tamara orders
Basic2%
Grow1%
Advanced0.6%
Plus (from $2,300 a month)0.2%

Cash on delivery is a manual payment method, so Shopify charges no fee on it.

Worked example: when Grow pays for itself

Grow halves Shopify's fee from 2% to 1%. So every BD 100 you take online saves BD 1.

That gives a simple rule. Grow pays for itself once your monthly gateway and Tamara sales pass 100 times the monthly price gap between Basic and Grow.

For example, take Shopify's US list prices: Basic $29 and Grow $79 on annual billing. That's a $50 gap, about BHD 18.800 a month.

Grow then breaks even at about BHD 1,880 a month in online payments. A store taking BD 5,000 online saves about BHD 31 a month after paying for the upgrade.

Regional prices are often lower, so swap in the two prices you see at sign-up.

Taking Benefit, BenefitPay and cards on Shopify

A gateway linked to BENEFIT gives you every method a Bahraini shopper looks for. You reach BENEFIT through an acquirer, a bank or payment company that onboards merchants.

Stripe (UAE account)NoNoYesCards only, UAE company needed

Velvetica Studio, a Gulf Shopify agency, reports card rates of about 2.5–3% plus a small fixed fee. Ask each gateway to quote Benefit and BenefitPay separately, since local debit is usually cheaper.

Benefit payments use a redirect. The shopper enters a one-time code on a secure page, then returns to your store. Test that round trip on a phone before launch.

Full gateway details are in our guide to payment methods in Bahrain.

Tamara and cash on delivery

Tamara's free Shopify app covers Bahrain, and it pays out weekly. Tabby doesn't operate there, so Tamara is the instalment option to add.

Sellers typically report Tamara fees of 4–6%, plus Shopify's transaction fee. It earns its keep on fashion, beauty and electronics baskets. The setup is in how to add Tamara to Shopify.

COD matters less here than elsewhere in the Gulf, because BenefitPay is the everyday habit. Keep it for first-time buyers, and confirm each order on WhatsApp before dispatch.

Pricing in BHD with 10% VAT

Set your store currency to BHD. Outside gateways charge in the store currency, so the shopper pays the exact price they saw.

The Bahraini dinar splits into 1,000 fils and is pegged at 0.376 to the dollar. Check these settings:

  • Three decimals. Preview a product page to confirm BD 12.500 shows, not BD 12.5.
  • Charm endings. End prices on .900 or .990, since a two-digit ending looks foreign.
  • VAT inside the price. Turn on tax-inclusive pricing, since shoppers expect 10% VAT in the shelf price.
  • Test the gateway amount. BD 9.900 should reach the gateway as 9900 fils.

Markup is applied, then local VAT is added on top.

Consumer prices in KSA and the UAE are expected to include VAT.

Optional % added to the net price per market (e.g. to cover duty, shipping or BNPL fees).

Rounding style

Prices ending in 9 (SAR 99, 149, 199; AED 49, 99) dominate on noon, Amazon.sa and Shein (observation). For 3-decimal currencies this gives x.x90 endings.

Your font supports the new Saudi riyal sign (U+20C1), so SAR prices use it. SAMA guidance puts the riyal sign to the left of the number, with a space, in every language. The text abbreviation ر.س is usually written after the number in Arabic.

KWD is pegged to an undisclosed basket, so its rate moves slightly. ≈0.31 per USD is an approximation; review it quarterly.

Selling to Bahrain from a UAE store

A UAE company on Shopify Payments can add Bahrain in Shopify Markets and charge in BHD, with a 2% conversion fee. Shopify rounds converted prices up to its default ending, and you can't change that rule.

So set fixed BHD prices in a Markets catalog instead. More on this in pricing in 3-decimal currencies.

Shipping orders to Bahrain

Most stores ship from Saudi Arabia or Dubai. Trucks over the King Fahd Causeway from Dammam or Khobar usually clear in 1–3 hours, so a Saudi warehouse reaches Manama in a day or two.

Watch the BHD 100 line. Since May 2026, parcels worth BHD 100 or more pay customs duty plus VAT at the border. Below it, both are waived.

So ship bigger orders DDP (delivered duty paid). You collect duty and VAT at checkout, and the shopper pays nothing at the door.

Shipping parcels in from abroad doesn't make you register for Bahraini VAT. That starts once you keep stock in Bahrain.

The border maths and who registers for Bahraini VAT are in how to sell online in Bahrain. Lanes and transit times are in our GCC cross-border shipping guide.

English and Arabic on your store

An English-first store is normal in Bahrain. Add Arabic for Bahraini families and for trust on product pages, invoices and returns.

Pick a theme that supports right-to-left (RTL) layout, then add Arabic in Settings > Languages. Shopify doesn't pre-translate its checkout into Arabic, so translate those strings yourself. Label local methods as "بطاقة بنفت" and "بنفت بي".

Our Arabic Shopify guide compares the translation apps.

Notes for UAE and Saudi brands

  • UAE Shopify Payments takes Bahraini Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay, but not Benefit-only debit cards.
  • Saudi stores can serve Bahrain from Dammam stock over the causeway. Tamara works in both countries.
  • Add a Bahraini CR once orders are steady, so a local gateway can switch on Benefit.

Notes for foreign and Chinese brands

  • Start on a marketplace. Noon runs a Bahrain store, and Amazon.ae ships in from the UAE.
  • Your own Shopify store can take Bahraini cards through a UAE gateway, while Benefit needs a Bahraini company.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, through a gateway that connects to BENEFIT. Tap's Shopify app lists Benefit debit and BenefitPay for Bahraini merchants. BenefitPay needs its own merchant registration through your acquirer, so ask for it by name when you apply.
