Key takeaways
  • For most first stock orders of 2–20 cbm, shared-container sea freight (LCL) is the cheapest way to ship.
  • Air freight wins when speed matters, and couriers make sense only for samples and small parcels.
  • Air and express charge on volumetric weight, so bulky, light cartons cost more than their scale weight suggests.
  • The estimate covers freight only. Add duty, import VAT and local charges with the landed cost calculator.

How much does it cost to ship your stock from China to the Gulf? It depends on how big the load is and how fast you need it.

This free estimator compares all four main options side by side: a full container, a shared container, air freight and express courier. Enter your shipment and you'll see a cost range, transit time and cost per unit for Jeddah, Dammam or Dubai.

2026 rates are volatile

Red Sea and Hormuz tensions pushed Gulf rates up sharply: a 40ft to Jeddah went from ~$3,250–3,650 (mid-2025) to $8,200–12,000 (Aug 2026), and Oct 2026 quotes still run $6,600–9,400. Quotes are valid for days, not months.

Freight only. Excludes customs duty (5% of CIF), 15% import VAT, SABER shipment certificate (SAR 350), origin/destination charges (except LCL CFS/docs) and inland delivery.

Indicative estimates based on forwarder quotes and market indices from Aug–Oct 2026; confirm with your forwarder.

How to use the shipping cost estimator

You only need your shipment's weight and volume. Your supplier's packing list has both.

  1. 1

    Choose the route

Pick South China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen) or East China (Shanghai, Ningbo), then Jeddah, Dammam for Riyadh, or Jebel Ali for Dubai.

  2. 2

    Enter the shipment size

Type the total weight in kg and volume in cbm (cubic metres). No totals yet? Switch to From cartons and enter the carton size, count and weight.

  3. 3

    Add your unit count

Enter how many units are in the shipment to see the freight cost per unit.

  4. 4

    Set your priority

Slide between Cheapest and Fastest. The tool highlights the best mode for that balance.

How it works and what's included

Each mode is priced the way forwarders actually bill it:

  • Sea FCL (full container). You pay per container. The tool fits your volume into the right mix of 20ft and 40ft boxes.
  • Sea LCL (shared container). You pay per cbm, plus a fixed fee per shipment for documents and the destination delivery order. One cbm counts as 1,000 kg, and there's a 1 cbm minimum.
  • Air freight. You pay per kg of chargeable weight. That's the higher of the real weight and the volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm, ÷ 6,000).
  • Express courier. Also per chargeable kg, with a stricter ÷ 5,000 divisor. It's flagged as uneconomic above about 70 kg.

These are the rates behind the estimate:

ModeJeddah / DammamDubai (Jebel Ali)
20ft container$5,085–6,215$3,992–4,952
40ft container$6,615–9,400 Jeddah, $6,615–9,500 Dammam$4,967–6,953
Sea transit20–30 days12–25 days from South China
LCL per cbm (ocean)$170–250$120–180
LCL warehouse (CFS) fees$40–85 per cbm + $160–320 per shipmentSame
Air per kg$4.50–9.50, 2–7 days$3.56–4.00, 2–4 days
Express per kg$5–15, 1–5 days$5–15, 2–5 days

Container rates are October 2026 quotes. LCL prices include the warehouse (CFS) handling at both ends, documents and the destination delivery order, so you can compare them fairly with a container.

With these rates, a good 20ft quote can beat LCL from about 14 cbm. By 20 cbm it usually does.

The estimate is freight only. Customs duty (5% of CIF value), import VAT and a SAR 350 SABER shipment certificate for regulated goods in Saudi Arabia all come on top. Add them with our landed cost calculator.

Worked example: a first stock order to Jeddah

Say you're shipping 1,000 units from Shenzhen to Jeddah. The cartons weigh 500 kg and take up 3 cbm.

ModeFreight estimatePer unitTransit
Sea LCL$790–1,325$0.79–1.3325–35 days
Air freight$2,250–4,750$2.25–4.752–7 days
Express$3,000–9,000$3.00–9.001–5 days
Sea FCL (one 20ft)$5,085–6,215$5.09–6.2220–30 days

With the slider near Cheapest, LCL is the clear pick. It's about a third of the price of air for this load.

Slide toward Fastest and the tool switches to air. That trade only pays off for urgent restocks or high-value goods.

A full container makes no sense at 3 cbm. Forwarders usually suggest one once you pass about 15 cbm, but at 2026 Gulf rates it's worth getting an all-in LCL quote too.

Frequently asked questions

It's a planning range built from forwarder quotes and market indices from August to October 2026. Gulf container rates moved a lot this year, so a real quote can land outside it. Use the estimate to choose a mode and budget, then get two or three all-in quotes before you book.
